TOKYO (Reuters) - Japan's Nikkei average was almost flat after hitting a 15-month high on Friday, as tech shares such as Advantest Corp climbed after Intel Corp reported a quarterly profit that beat expectations, underscoring hopes for a 2010 tech sector recovery.

Japanese cosmetics giant Shiseido jumped 4 percent after it said it would buy California-based beauty product firm Bare Escentuals Inc for $1.7 billion.

But the benchmark Nikkei flirted with negative territory throughout the morning session on investor caution that it had gained too rapidly in a short space of time.

"Buyers dominated at the open after Intel's good earnings. But investors are beginning to worry about the speed of recent market gains and may be leaning toward profit-taking," said Mitsuo Shimizu, deputy general manager at Cosmo Securities.

"We need to brace ourselves for some adjustment at some point, particularly when the Nikkei nears the 11,000 level."

The benchmark Nikkei inched down 18.36 points to 10,889.32, after climbing as high as 10,961.57, its highest since October 2008.

The broader Topix was unchanged at 959.72.

After the bell, Intel, the world's largest chipmaker, announced fourth-quarter revenue and a profit margin outlook that handily beat Wall Street's expectations, helped by better pricing and demand for server chips.

Despite Friday's pause, market players said the presence of foreign investors is buoying Japanese stocks.

"Buying by foreign investors appears to be widening, though it's not clear at this point whether they are buying because Japanese stocks are cheap or because they are reallocating their portfolios," said Hiroaki Kuramochi, chief equity marketing officer at Tokai Tokyo Securities.

"It's not as if some Japan-specific news has come out."

Among other notable stocks, Daikin Industries fell 3.3 percent to 3,535 yen after Credit Suisse cut its rating on the maker of commercial air-conditioners to "neutral," saying that a number of positives had already been factored into the share price, which had reached Credit Suisse's target of 3,700 yen.
